Job Description

Performs work in the enforcement of law and maintenance of order, protection of life and property, prevention and investigation of crime, and custody of prisoners.

Job Responsibilities

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Patrol assigned areas, responds to requests for law enforcement service, and takes appropriate action.

2. Conducts initial investigation of crime; processes the crime scene, including collecting physical evidence, interviewing witnesses/suspects, and taking impressions/fingerprints/photographs; calls Detective for complex or major crimes. May follow through to completion.

3. Use physical (and verbal) force to control and arrest law violators.

4. Exercise rational judgment.

5. Maintain the confidence and trust of peers, superiors, and general citizenry.

6. Searches buildings, tracks suspects and conducts missing persons and lost person searches.

7. Performs duties pertaining to execution of Court Orders; for example, serves legal documents/ warrants, transports prisoners, testifies in court to present evidence and explain arrest/facts.

8. Logs daily activities and completes required reports.

9. Prepares a variety of reports, documents, and inventories as required.

10. Collaborates and/or assists other agencies in investigation, surveillance; assists jailer in bookings, cell searches or disturbances.

11. Identifies elements of crimes, decides if arrest is warranted and collaborates with the Meeker County Attorney to determine formal charges. Protects rights of public in arrest to conclusion.

12. Assist public in providing various safety convenience services, such as unlocking cars, animal complaints, vehicle breakdowns, providing directions, warning of dangerous areas, etc.

13. Speaks before community groups on selected topics as directed.

14. Attends training classes, workshops or seminars to learn procedures and techniques.

15. Performs other related work as assigned or as it becomes apparent in carrying out responsibilities.

16. Responds to and investigates vehicle and non-vehicle accidents and administers first aid as needed.

17. Transports prisoners and others as assigned and handles a variety of escort duties as assigned.

18. Provide credible and truthful testimony in court.

19. Operates a variety of rescue equipment including boats, all terrain vehicles, and related equipment.

20. Performs security checks of public and private buildings.

21. Assists all Sheriff’s Office staff as needed.

22. May be assigned to special assignments by Sheriff or Chief Deputy.

23. Responsible for cooperating with the county safety program so that the operations may be carried on in such manner as to ensure the safety of the employee and his/her fellow employees.

24. Employee's responsibility is to be consistent with county employee handbook, county-wide safety rules, department safety rules, and specific job training.

6. Ability to compile and analyze facts and evidence and to make valid civil and criminal recommendations.

7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, other law enforcement, and criminal justice agency personnel.

8. Ability to perform assigned duties and tasks in an effective, efficient, and safe manner.

9. Ability and knowledge to operate law enforcement equipment with logic and caution.

10. Ability to use computer, recorder, camera equipment, firearms and electronic equipment.

11. Ability to lawfully and competently possess a firearm.

12. Ability to provide credible and truthful testimony.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum requirement: two year postsecondary law enforcement or related degree.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

MN Peace Officers Standards and Training license or eligible.

CPR and First Responder certified.

Valid Class D driver’s license

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Communication Skills -

1. Ability to communicate effectively with the public

3. Ability to orally report facts clearly, logically, accurately and objectively.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed through vehicle operation, visits to homes and businesses, or in the office of the Law Enforcement Center. Occasional lifting requirements of up to 75 pounds and on rare occasions a push/pulling requirement of up 200 pounds with assistance of co-workers. Exposures may include, but are not limited to, inclement/hazardous weather conditions, intoxicated/armed/abusive persons, unrestrained animals, body fluids and communicable diseases.

1. Must be in good physical condition.

2. Must maintain mental and emotional fitness.

3. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring coordination, dexterity and strength adequate to lift and move objects of bulk and weight up to 75 pounds.

4. Ability to work indoors or out, day or night, and under conditions of adverse weather and temperature.

5. Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged standing, pushing, pulling, climbing, and stooping.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Must pass a full background check.

Must pass a physical examination.

Must pass a psychological examination.

STARTING SALARY

Level 9Ds:  $4,145.17 - $5,319.04/month ($23.91 - $30.69/hour)
